A Beautiful Way of Telling Time

A Beautiful Way of Telling Time

Our design team believes that clocks are an integral part of interiors and design, and that nearly every room in the home should have a beautiful way of telling time. But with cell phones, tablets, computers and cable boxes all technologically noting the time of day, analog clocks are becoming a lost art.

But a clock in each room doesn’t have to be a giant round clock on the wall, it can be a subtle accessory adorning a table top or bookshelf, or a beautiful floor clock in the corner of a bedroom.
This family room fireplace was given a makeover with custom built-ins. Notice the mantle clock on the left, which ties in the cabinetry with the accessories.

Clocks should be showpieces, accenting your home decor, displaying not only the time but your sense of style as well.

We adorned this formal living room with beautiful accessories, including a clock which sits atop a custom-made Marge Carson ottoman.

Dressing up a dining room buffet with the perfect accessories, including as a hand-made clock on the far left, that fits the home’s style.

Let clocks show your uniqueness and personality.

A floor clock in the corner that works with the color scheme of the room adds a touch of whimsy.

This rustic kitchen makeover was accented with a wall clock that coordinates with the kitchen’s style & finishes.

With an unlimited number of ways to add this functional accessory, nearly every room in your home should have a beautiful way of telling time!

South Barrington Dining Room Project

South Barrington Dining Room Project

We pride ourselves on the work we do, therefore referrals and repeat clients are the biggest compliment we can receive. This was no different!  After completing a previous project for this South Barrington family we were called in once again to do some more….

Our clients decided it was time to have us come back and address their tired dining room which no longer matched the updated main floor of their home. Typically when clients express interest in “updating” a room, they are unsure of the direction they want to go as well as how to get there. So for our design team, the best solution is to give them a detailed, comprehensive plan of how to achieve the final result.

During our initial consultation, we discussed how to get the most out of this room without adding square footage. With the large family they have and the entertaining they do, the tall order was to seat at least 8 people comfortably. And tall ceilings, a narrow space, an awkwardly angled entrance, and the lack of light coming in meant we had our work cut out for us.

Dining Room Before

Dining Room Before

Like most of us, this family has lived with their furniture for many years and was ready for a change. Dining room “sets” were all the rage 20 years ago: clients purchased matching pieces in one finish, typically some variation of oak, or bought multiple pieces from one furniture collection; it was IN and it was EASY. And just like mint green appliances or pink shag carpet, you can tell in which decade the room was last updated!

We selected this beautifully carved dining table and coordinating chairs with decorative back accents from Marge Carson that was currently on display in our Highland Park showroom. Once our clients saw it in person, they were in agreement that this was the best choice for their new dining room. This is a great tip for re-designing any space in your home: find a starting point and use this as inspiration to set the tone and color for your room. Our inspiration was the rich Marge Carson fabric on the chairs that set the mood for the room.

It was a breeze from there, our team then coordinated beautiful fabrics for new window treatments and a new style that allowed us to get more lighting into the room and accentuate the tall windows. Their existing drapery was simply outdated; with a floral pattern in pink & green and matching panels & valance it needed to go. Our answer to this was a rich solid silk panel & complimentary patterned swag overlay. By mounting it as high as possible on decorative hardware, it draws your eye up and makes the ceiling appear higher, giving the room a grand feel.

Window Treatments

The most common element that is always overlooked in any project is the ceiling. We advised our clients not to be afraid of going bold and bringing the drama on the ceiling in this room. We selected a warm decorative finish and added a beautiful carved medallion, not only to highlight the crystal chandelier but to also add some depth and architectural details that this room was lacking. We completed the look with layered crown moulding that we finished with a rich glaze to emphasize the architecture of the room.

Complementing their dining table and chairs, our design team chose a black & gold narrow open console with eglomise details to serve as a buffet. The mirrored back & top of this piece added another texture to the room without making it too busy, and the diamond-pattern was perfect to tie in the diamond-details found on the backs of the dining chairs and Fine Art wall sconces. Using a narrow console in this room that was lacking space, versus a buffet, allows our clients to have a serving area without sacrificing any additional floor space. We finished the look with perfectly-placed accessories and the client’s existing mirror, which we all loved.

The right lighting in any space is very important. Not only does it highlight your furniture, accessories, and artwork, but it creates ambiance and sets the tone of the room. We knew these Fine Art wall sconces were an absolutely perfect look for this dining room.

A hand-made silk and wool rug with deep color tones brought this entire room and the grand feel of the home together. The end result is a luxurious yet warm and inviting dining room that our clients and our design team are very proud of!

Bathroom Remodeling

Bathroom Remodeling

It always seems that once we complete one project in a client’s home, we end up moving through their entire home, or at least one floor to begin with! And it’s no different with this project. Our clients came to us with a request to give them an updated look for their kitchen. Once that was completed, the results were so fantastic and the clients loved it and felt that since the process was so fast and smooth, and they loved the end result, they wanted to continue working with us for their next project.

It was not long before they contacted us again to start their powder room project. We were so excited to hear from them again, as we had an absolutely fabulous time working with these clients. They were looking for something to tie in with their updated kitchen, as the powder room is adjacent and they wanted their home to have a nice flow.

Here is the room before our team got our hands on it:

Step one in our game plan: take down that wallpaper! We are sure that at one point this color palette and themed wallpaper was in everyone’s home. It was THE THING that was en vogue 15 years ago, but not anymore.  Some of us still remember the times when we all had avocado-colored toilets and sinks, and flowered wall paper with matching towels, floor mats and window treatments! Considering all that, this wasn’t really that bad. So all we had to do was get rid of the wallpaper for the room to be able to breathe again.

We did a beautiful smooth Venetian plaster on the walls to create warmth without using a pattern. Our clients also wanted to make sure if they ever chose to repaint it, they wouldn’t have to sand their walls or even worse, replace their drywall. Using a smooth Venetian plaster was the best way to accomplish the sophistication that a textured wall brings, without the commitment of fully refinishing their walls down the road. They loved that idea!

Once the wallpaper was down and we dressed the walls with a beautiful Tuscan finish, it was obvious that their existing vanity, mirror, and dated light fixture had to go as well.

We had a blast taking it all down! We also thought that their existing vanity was WAY too big for a room that served only as a powered room; and even though it technically is a full bath, our clients never used it as such, as it is on the main floor of their home. So we decided to scale it down and make the vanity more free-floating in the room with space around it, versus tucked in the corner. It gives the space more of an open and formal look.

We chose this hand-carved walnut vanity with antique gold leafing on the carvings, finished with a Crema Marfil marble counter top, porcelain sink, and Oil Rubbed Bronze fixtures.

With having only one window in the room, we decided to dress it up without taking the focus off of the rest of the space. We feel we accomplished that by using a main fabric that is similar in tone to the wall finish. We didn’t want it to completely disappear into the walls, therefore our finishing touch was this beautiful copper solid-color bending along the leading edge of our treatment. It is a bathroom after all, and privacy is a must but blinds or shutters wouldn’t do it for us. A soft Roman shade made from a sheer fabric, and lined for privacy, was the icing on the cake and it did the job!

Anytime we have an opportunity to add an architectural detail to a room, we just go for it. In this case, it was our 4 1/2″ Colonial-style crown molding. Since our client decided to keep her existing cream tile on the floor, we thought that having white decorative trim along the ceiling would tie all the levels of the space together.

We have accomplished a beautiful, timeless look and added another very happy client to Linly Designs’ ever-growing list of satisfied customers!

Hinsdale Home – Project Underway!

Hinsdale Home – Project Underway!

Since we often post before and after shots of completed projects, we thought it would be great if our readers could get a glimpse into the middle stages of a project, before we complete it!

We recently started on a great new project in Hinsdale. We met the client during our Open House event in April, and she visited our showroom about a month later to speak with us about her home, and from there she scheduled an In-Home Consultation. We are now in the middle of the project, assisting with her kitchen remodel and also helping design a fireplace mantle with built-ins, as well as coordinate furniture, rugs, lighting and window treatments, and eventually accessories, for her entire lower level.

Here is a shot of her Family Room wall where we designed these beautiful custom built-ins and mantel to give the room more cohesiveness:

Here is a “before” shot of the Family Room:
